Keeping the tradition of Carnaval alive
Anna Valentina Agnoletti
Action process

The first step of my action plan was to start sketching, I had some ideas in mind before starting, though they weren’t clear, I did some research and used Carnaval costumes used in the past as a reference for colors and textures, the first sketch I did was without looking at any images, simply using my creativity, I did not look terrible for a first sketch but it was definitely not what I would want to paint. I also realized that the anatomy was completely off. So I researched some models that I could use.

The second sketch I did after finding the model and fixing everything I did wrong in the first one such as not having colors and not knowing how to draw feathers, was much better. I was extremely happy with her costume and pose.

The next steps were to sketch and improve every time. Until I came up with this:

In this costume, the model is in a different pose, which applies better to the subject and the feather has a different color to make it more festive, as well as they have a gap in the middle for the headpiece.

The last step was to buy all colors of paint and paintbrushes to start painting.

The main obstacle I encountered was while painting, I had done some research beforehand on how o prepare a canvas for acrylic paint, many of the videos I watched said that using painting medium was fine, believing what the videos had told me I made a 50:50 white paint and transparent medium mixture after it dried I realized it was a mistake because now the paints do not go on smoothly and it makes it impossible to make a uniform background. There was nothing I could do to save the canvas, so I decided to use it as a draft for the final product. I learned from this experience and on the second canvas, I did not prepare it and used the paint right on, which worked much better for me.

Overall I am incredibly happy with how my painting came out.
